Roosts and nest boxes. Providing your hens with a nice, enclosed area to lay their eggs in will not only make them feel more comfortable doing so, but will keep them from laying their eggs willy nilly. Nest boxes can be as simple as a 5-gallon bucket nailed sidewise on the wall with hay stuffed inside. Chicken roosts should be about 2 inches square, but rounded on top to make it easy for chickens to grasp. Provide just under a foot of roost space per chicken and keep them about 18 inches from the walls and ceiling. Consider giving them multiple roosts at a variety of levels so each chicken can find its preference and have plenty of room.
